The Kuala Lumpur Petronas Twin Towers, and boy are they a beautiful sight to see made of tonnes of stainless steel and glass

KL Petronas Twin Towers - 005
April 25, 2012 by Merv Barrett

We arrived at the Petronas Twin Towers at 1pm and they really are a spectacular sight to see, amazing, beautiful how they are exactly the same with a star like design and connecting bridge. Each towering in the KL skyline at 451.9m tall. We headed down to the ticket lobby after we took some photos outside, our options were 4pm or 7pm and the lady suggested we take the 7pm as that is sunset. We’re glad we did.

So we have 5 hours and 45 minutes to kill till the elevator ride to the sky bridge and top, what can we do? Oh yay, we happen to be at the Kuala Lumpur City Center KLCC a shoppers paradise with five floors of shopping extending in two directions as far as the eye can see… I’m in hell and Toni is in heaven.

We hit the food court first for a bit to eat and it’s huge too with lots of international choices mostly Asian food with a bit of western fast food thrown in for good measure. We did the round surveying the selection and I decided on some quesiadas after asking a western man lined up at Boost Juice where he got his and Toni opted for spaghetti Bolognese. After the food, I like to combat the cooked food with a juice so my body doesn’t totally freak out and turn me into an angry hulk. If you ever find yourself angry or frustrated ask yourself what you ate recently and that’s probably why. So a juice later and 3 shots of wheatgrass from Boost and we were good to go…

Off you go Toni I’ll meet you in a hour. As there are 5 floors and shops everywhere we decided to meet in the center oval on opposite ends in an hour. That way we could easily scan up an down and see each other in this massive shopping hell..heaven depending on your taste.

I opted to do a walk to see what was here and you guessed it, nothing but clothes, shoes and crap that you really don’t need but we met up in an hour and Toni had bought three pairs of shoes while I lounged at Starbucks on the Free Wi-fi. Bliss, coffee and comfy seating and people watching, get me out of here!

Amazing enough Toni wanted to go and no complaining from me so we headed to the Aquarium via the underground tunnel. A pretty great aquarium with interesting exhibits, big fish, shark tank, and more spiders we headed back to the towers above ground this time though central park. We saw lots of Jagger’s taking advantage of the park running track surrounding a waterpark with slides for kids and a playground. Oh look monkey bars, and I’m the biggest monkey so I went for it, hand over hand, slipped, fell, scraped my knee and foot and ego had a laugh and Toni missed it all! What a dork I am.

The Petronas Twin Towers

Finally limped to the lobby to take one of the 78 elevators in the buildings to the sky bridge. We had a cool digital briefing where the lady was projected on mist kind of like a virtual Princess Leigha in Star Wars, neat.

Our first stop was the sky bridge which is 46 floors up has two floors and weighs 770 tonnes the same as three Boing 747s and isn’t attached to either building as it kind of hangs between the two, our guide pointed out the 1m sway it can do as the buildings themselves can sway in the high winds.

Wow, it’s almost sunset and what a beautiful view, we can see the sun getting ready to set in the distance and the colors in the sky are amazing. The oranges and pinks are stunning and the view is breathtaking. Glad we waited for the 7pm time as we already saw the city during the day from the KL Tower.

After several minutes we were ushered back to the elevator to head to our second stop the 86th floor. The building has 88 floors in total, I wonder who has that office?

The 86th floor had lots of exhibits, city models, and replica towers so happy snapping we did. We can see the KL Tower from here and the buildings are lit up now and the architects who designed these buildings have really created a spectacular timeless design, it’s magic up, here. The sun is still setting as we are higher now and get a few more minutes of sun. I took some wonderful photos of the city at night and what a great day so far!

Our time is up and we head back down to the skybridge level where we swap elevators back to the lobby and token gift shop. Once outside we took some more photos and decide to keep going and head out via our hotel room to unload and quickly look at our photos before heading out to china town night markets.

We get there pretty late and fortunately for me a lot of the stalls are closing up but we managed to pick up another souvenir bottle opener of the twin towers for 10RM after haggling (about $3AUD).

We decided to go to McDonalds for Wi-Fi and finally get back to our hotel at 11:30. We’re both totally zonked need sleep to get ready for day 3, lights out good night!
